ADVANCE PRAISE FOR CREATURE COMFORTS IN SPACE

“Creature Comforts in Space is a key to unlocking the monumental opportunity

of Large-Scale Space Migration (LSSM).”

– Frank White, space philosopher, author of “The Overview Effect”

“Outer space design pioneer Samuel Coniglio has been pushing the boundaries of

creating ever better quality experiences for living off-world.”

– John Spencer, Outer Space Architect, Founder of the Space Tourism Society

“Samuel Coniglio’s Creature Comforts catalogs the things that

will make the future of space more human.”

– Phnam Bagley, space architect and industrial designer at Nonfiction

After 50 years of space exploration, off-world living is still like going on an extreme camping trip. Living out there is uncomfortable at best. This book tackles the challenge of Creature Comforts: those hard-to-describe things that make life more enjoyable, have mental health benefits, and are fun! Using the analogy of building a homestead on the high frontier, early space settlers need to develop long term sustainability techniques with limited resources. This book isn't just about making life better beyond our planet; it's a blueprint for enhancing life on Earth through thoughtful, space-inspired design.

This is the first book from Samuel Coniglio, a space futurist and design advocate on a mission to understand the challenges of off-world living, and to use them as design constraints for building a better orbital lifestyle.

About SAMUEL

Samuel Coniglio is a futurist, technical writer, photographer, inventor, and private space industry advocate. He is a board member and former Vice President of the Space Tourism Society.

Since 1996, he has been researching and prototyping off-world domestic concepts to make life easier “for the rest of us” in space. His Zero Gravity Cocktail Glass concept won international acclaim and reinvents how to drink liquids in a microgravity environment. His cocktail-making “drinkbots” have been showcased on Discovery Channel and Wall Street Journal. His new book, “Creature Comforts in Space,” is about making life more comfortable and sustainable for off-world living.

LOS ANGELES, CA (MAY 22, 2024) – What are your “creature comforts?” Could you live without them in a space habitat orbiting the Earth? Could you adapt or create new creature comforts that work off-world? Dive into the future of extraterrestrial existence with Samuel M. Coniglio's book, CREATURE COMFORTS IN SPACE: Designing Enjoyment and Sustainability for Off-World Living, on sale June 24, 2024. This visionary design book blends hard science with imaginative solutions to craft a guide for making life beyond Earth as comfortable and sustainable as possible.

Space futurist and author Samuel M. Coniglio explores the design challenges inherent in not only surviving but enjoying living in a unique extreme environment. Using experiences learned from NASA astronauts onboard the International Space Station and from Earthbound analogs, Samuel takes the reader on a journey through human-centered design for extraordinary conditions. The book isavailable for preview at the joint Space Tourism Conference and International Space Development Conference today, May 22, 2024, in Los Angeles, where the author will celebrate the preorder launch of the upcoming book and present its subject matter on several related panels.

From a cup of hot tea to spaces to move and play, from taking a shower to doing laundry in microgravity, there are aspects of life we take for granted on Earth that are nearly impossible in a cramped space station. Creature Comforts in Space offers concepts and suggestions for future space architects and industrial designers to make life easier for the next generation of space habitats.

Book Highlights:

    • Dangers and Opportunities: Learn about the pitfalls of space travel and how to re-invent them as design constraints.
    • Food and Drink: Learn current and emerging ways to grow food, prepare meals, and clean up while floating around!
    • Reinventing the Basics: Discover how some fundamentals of living have to be reinvented off-world.
    • Sustainability Practices: Explore how sustainable living can be achieved through meticulous resource management and advanced ecological technologies.
    • Mental Health and Social Well-being: Understand the critical importance of mental and social health in the isolating environment of space.
